How to read stronger, gentler and clinically studied claims

A comparison claim needs a named comparator, a tested formulation and a relevant outcome. Without those details, a percentage can create more certainty than the evidence supports.

Stronger than what?

A claim about higher ingredient strength is different from a claim about a better clinical result. Ask which product or formulation is the comparator and whether it resembles what you would receive. A larger concentration is not a universal measure of value.

Agency’s Night Renew page uses strength and gentleness comparisons while noting that formulas vary and some contain no tretinoin. The qualification belongs with the headline when evaluating a personalized product.[source]

What was actually studied?

Determine whether the claim comes from a controlled trial, a laboratory test, a customer survey or a provider’s interpretation of ingredient research. Those methods answer different questions and have different limitations.

A cream can contain a studied ingredient without the finished blend having been independently tested. FDA’s compounding guidance explains why the status of a custom finished medicine should not be inferred from ingredient familiarity.[source]

Comfort, appearance and health are different outcomes

A report of less stinging does not establish a better result for pigmentation or acne. A hydration measurement is not automatically a reduction in visible wrinkles. A photograph does not measure every relevant outcome.

Read what changed, how it was measured and over what period. Then ask whether the result is meaningful for your goal. This publication does not combine unrelated outcomes into a single invented score.

Who took part?

Results can depend on the participants, their skin characteristics, prior treatments and the surrounding routine. A selected group’s experience should not be presented as a guarantee for every new patient.

For sensitive skin, AAD’s retinoid guidance emphasizes the potential for irritation. A product described as gentler still needs an individualized discussion and instructions appropriate to the actual formula.[source]

A useful claim survives ordinary questions

Ask for the source, the comparison and the formulation. A clear explanation can make a claim more useful; missing details should remain uncertain rather than being filled in with promotional language.

Our reviews link provider pages for product claims and separate them from regulatory and dermatology sources. CoreAge Rx’s commercial placement does not upgrade the strength of its evidence or downgrade an alternative’s evidence.
